Aims and Objectives

Within the Art & Design Department our aim is to develop pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills in this subject and to develop their ability to be creative over the course of three years at our school. During these three years each pupil will:-
*Research, gather and interpret information from direct experiences, observations,   memory, imagination and a range of traditional and digital sources.
*Develop an appreciation of the work of artists, designers and craft workers from their own and other cultures, past and present.
*Develop their creative thinking skills and  produce personal creative learning outcomes through investigating, realising, designing and making via drawing and graphic media, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, 3 dimensional construction or prototyping, lens based and digital media.
Use the visual elements with understanding when engaging in Art and Design and evaluate and appreciate their own work and that of others through valid discussion and reflection.
The Art & Design Department aims to achieve the above by fulfilling the three main Curriculum objectives which are as follows:-

Objective 1: To develop pupils as individuals.
Objective 2: To develop pupils as contributors to Society.
Objective 3: To develop pupils as contributors to the Economy and Environment.

Opportunity for Developing/Encouraging Creativity
The Art Department takes the roll of designing props for most school productions such as school plays and we actively seek helpers from enthusiastic pupils who wish to further develop their creative skills and techniques. We also continually display pupil work of all levels and ranges of ability throughout the school. Every year we enter pupils into Lurgan Show and receive numerous prizes every year for all year groups. The Art Department also encourages pupils to become involved in the school House competitions and other Art related competitions outside of school.

New Facilities (2014)
Our Art room has begun proceedings for a new Art and Design Suite. Our Department shall consist of a new ceramics area, an ICT/ Graphics Suite with Apple Mac computers, a larger main classroom with Interactive white board and also included shall be a staff office and store room. At present, we have re-located to another classroom to enable these changes to take place. We hope to be in our new suite before the end of this school year.
